FOODNET, a non-profit food bank serving Lafayette Parish, was established in October 1987. The food distributed by FOODNET is donated by our community. KLFY TV 10 and the U.S. Postal Workers sponsor FOODNET's two largest food drives. KLFY's "Food for Families" food drive takes place in December and the Postal Workers food drive is held in july. During major elections, the four Rotary Clubs of Lafayette collect donations for FOODNET at the polling places. Numerous corporations and organizations also hold independent food drives for FOODNET throughout the year.

In addition, FOODNET operates a basket program in which FOODNET collection baskets are placed in participating local supermarkets.

Foodnet partners with Second Harvest Food Bank of New Orleans & Acadiana. Second Harvest provided Food and Supplies after Hurricanes Lili, Katrina, and Rita. Second Harvest contributed over 4 million pounds of food to FOODNET since 2001.

FOODNET has been a member of United Way since its inception. Through the United Way, the private sector provides an on-going source of funding for FOODNET.

FOODNET has distributed tens of thousands of tons of food since 1987 to those in need. FOODNET presently serves several agencies including: Faith House Battered Women's Shelter, the Children's Shelter, St. Joseph Shelter for Men, Acadiana Youth Shelter for Girls, St. Joseph Diner, the Red Cross, Alleman Center, Acadiana Cares, St. Francis Foundation for Substance Abuse, and The Ark.

FOODNET operates under the direction of a Board of Directors. Staff includes a paid executive director, warehouse personnel, basket program manager, and community volunteers. These volunteers devote their time to FOODNET on a regular basis.

Although "FOODNET OF LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANA, INC." serves only Lafayette Parish, FOODNET has representatives in more than 68 towns and cities that serve the nine Parishes that comprise Acadiana.
